These are greatly challenging times for all of us. For some of our friends however, the effects of the Corona Virus has added to an already difficult stretch. Sadly, this has been the case for the Raramuri people and those who call the Copper Canyons home. The most recent impact has been the postponement of the Ultra Marathon Caballo Blanco and Los Caballitos Runs (kids races). Micah True created the (then called Copper Canyon Ultra Marathon and later changed to honor his passing) Ultra Caballo Blanco to help introduce the beauty of the Raramuri people, their culture and their lands to endurance athletes around the world. A most important motivation was also to have the race create an opportunity for all those involved in the event to participate in an act of Korima – an opportunity to share amongst one another. The Korima exchange included vales (vouchers that are used for purchasing pantry staples and food stuffs). So along with missing out on the opportunity to run together in celebration, the cancellation also means there will be no race vales shared this March from running the Ultra Caballo Blanco.
Of course nothing can replace the magic of the Ultra Caballo, but together we can participate in Korima, and we can run together in spirit. Together We Run Free.
Corre Libre the Run – Reflection and Remembrance
Corre Libre is Spanish for ‘Run Free’. “Run Free” is perhaps the most perfect simple message ever shared for those that run. While we cannot articulate the meaning of Micah’s Message as he would have, we can of course apply it to running with many interpretations, however we believe that it was surely more of a life message he shared than specifically a running one…
Sometimes we just need to get perspective, sometimes we need to let go of all the weight, the burdens and the frustrations and we need to Corre Libre. Yes, it is important that we reflect on those things that sadden our hearts and those gut punch moments in life that inevitably occur, but we still choose a life of gratitude, joy and celebration and we Run Free, and we Run Together.
There is no specific distance set to complete the Corre Libre Run. Please run for a period of time that allows you to experience and enjoy the simple pleasure of Running Free, be that 5 minutes or 24 hours.
We ask that you run in remembrance of the past year, reflecting on not only the hardships and loss that the Pandemic has caused, but also the blessings that we have received that perhaps would not have materialized had we never come to know Covid 19. During your run please consider those that may be experiencing difficulties and celebrate the privilege that we have to participate in Korima with them.
The Raramuri have a term of greeting: Kuira-Ba’ - translated as best and simple as possible, it shares that “We Are One”. What a great (True) Message this really is, as we all are interconnected and dependent on one another - especially during challenging times. So while we cannot currently all run in one specific geographic location, we are one, and we can be with one another in heart and in spirit. Corre Libre Amigos!
Support (Korima Options)
100% of the proceeds from this event will be used to distribute Vales (vouchers that can be used to purchase essential foods and pantry items) to the Raramuri communities via True Messages www.truemessages.org the nonprofit inspired by the works and simple life wisdoms of Micah True (Caballo Blanco) . Even if you are not able to register, most important, is to join us in this special run and take the time to reflect and Corre Libre.
